I really liked the Etruscan curse and the storytelling of an ancient warrior wrongly accused of murdering his wife and child, and then subsequently brought into gruesome death at the face of a monster.

That, in my opinion, was probably the best part of the book. The plot was very predictable. The ending was unsurprising.

Moreover, in some parts of the book, I thought the plot was choppy, in that sometimes things would happen and I often felt as though I had missed some things along the way.

All in all, I thought this book was okay, but poorly executed. Thus only earning a 2-star rating in my opinion. I can't believe I've never read any of his other books.

I'm going to look for more by this author. Definately worth the read. View 1 comment. Oh my soul. This book was keeping me up late.

As soon as i finished one chaper I wanted to know what happens next. But it is a really good book. I wish that there was a movie based on this book.

I would surely want to watch that. I found this book a struggle to get through. The main character was a bit of a jerk and thus harder to root for as the story went along.

The story was not engaging enough for me to want to stay with it and I fought my way through simply to reach the conclusion. This would be a definite skip from me and I don't say that about many books.

Review to follow xxx. Generally, this is a book that ranged from okay to quite good. Depends on how you see it.

The mystery is okay, the pacing is good. But I noticed there's something lacking on the characterization and other personal details.

And also on the storytelling method. It's like The lack of dialogues also made me gave this book some minus points. Which is pretty saddening to me , since I Generally, this is a book that ranged from okay to quite good.

So yeah, I was sort of expecting some kind of intricate Angels and Demons. This is a non complicated, historical thriller with a mythical beast, lots of grisly murders and archaeologists!

Yes it is cheesy but it is a quick little read that will keep you entertained. A book that stops you doing anything else, loved the mood and the characters and learnt a little history as well.

Valerio Masimmo does two things: he takes you on an excavation and gives you the best history lesson you'd ever have through his writing.

This was The problem here is that I'm not sure if it's truly the book or just a really shitty translation from the original Italian.

The characters were terrible, nothing to them, shitty dialogue, zero chemistry with each other or the reader. Therefore I didn't care if they lived or died probably wouldn't notice if they did die.

I understand this is a plot driven book but come on. Plus there was an unpleasant cringe worthy romance thrown in for some god awful reason.

Why was it the This was Why was it there? I don't know, to torture us? Maybe having to read about the 'romance' between who-do-you-think-you-are Fabrizio and dull-as-a-doorknob Francesca was the real curse in the end.

And then there is the addition of the little kid. Don't even get me started on annoying children.

The only interesting consistent character is the hell ghost dog and they burn him. I will say this, the history is well done.

I actually learned a lot about Etruscan history which is why I upped the book to two stars instead of negative one. Just so bad. His fascination is disrupted by a series of bizarre phone calls from a woman telling him to leave the boy in peace.

When a tomb is discovered and the raiders are murdered, Fabrizio gets personally involved in the investigation. You can read this entire review and others like it at San Diego Book Review.

I picked this up at a discount book store and didn't expect much of it, so I have to give it five stars - it was surprisingly engaging and well-written.

It's not a book to read and reread and find new things in - it's a straightforward mystery, some police investigations, some archaeology, some love story, some horror elements.

Characterizations are not great - the main character is a bit of a jerk, and no one is described in much depth, but I didn't think that was a huge problem in this case.

A I picked this up at a discount book store and didn't expect much of it, so I have to give it five stars - it was surprisingly engaging and well-written.

As a mystery the book flows smoothly, develops well and is basically a solid example of its genre. Rather dated and ridiculously unbelievable.

Having read some of his other books, this was quite disappointing. Great story. I was hooked from the first page! Thrilling storyline, a lot of suspense, but a bit too much description of everyday tasks and doings.

Maybe the worst of all Manfredi's books. I was so unlucky that was the 1st of his books that happened to read, because delayed me from reading the rest of them.

A quick, entertaining read, with plenty of historical details to get lost in. Well worth a read. This book was a huge disappointment, I had so many expectations for it.

There are three female supporting characters, now keep in mind that two of these are clearly educated, but the only description we get for them is comments on their figure and looks, literally for every female character, they are introduced as sex objects.

It doesn't even This book was a huge disappointment, I had so many expectations for it. It doesn't even slightly touch the capabilities of these women nor the complexities of them, and the over-sexualisation of them is not only degrading, but quite frankly it makes Manfredi seem more like a trashy romance-novel wannabee than the reputable historical drama novelist that he's supposed to be.

Rather than exploring relationships and creating depth in the story, the supporting characters are merely used for fillers. The only thing I enjoyed about the book is the historical parts about the Etruscan empire , in the start of the book I liked the sense of mystery, but it got to a point where it was just downright predictable.

Through archaeology the setting of this novel takes the reader back twenty four centuries to a dreadful massacre.

Seemingly triggered by an investigation being carried out by Fabrizio Castellani a long dead monster comes to life and begins ravaging the countryside, attacking people out late at night.

But which of his investigations has triggered this? The bronze statue of the young boy, the Phersu tomb he has excavated, or the tablet inscriptions his boss is translating in secret?

Fabrizio is a l Through archaeology the setting of this novel takes the reader back twenty four centuries to a dreadful massacre.

Fabrizio is a loose cannon who likes to do his own thing, so while he cooperates with the local police chief, he also keeps secret some of what he is doing.

There are Gothic overtones to this novel and a reliance on the supernatural. The story got me so enthralled that I had to get up in the middle of the night to finish off the last thirty pages because my mind would not give it a rest.

Looking back on the novel I think the author changed his mind several times about where the story was going and I detected a number of threads that looked interesting at the time, but actually went nowhere.

Nevertheless it was quite a good read and I could see it making a good basis for a scary thriller movie. This book was just okay.

I really enjoyed all of the archaeology parts in it, however, I wasn't such a fan of the fantastical parts.

If I'm going to read a fantasy book, I prefer witches, vampires, demons and the like. This story just somehow decided to add one small part of fantasy into it which I thought really took away from the plot.

It was kind of like watching Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull where the whole time it could be believable, and then they throw in aliens.

What a disastrous e This book was just okay. What a disastrous ending. This book uses that type of fantasy.

It was kind of annoying to try and figure out what these random words were The front of the book has a review that says: "Manfredi shows Dan Brown how it should be done.

Most definitely not. Although the book was entertaining there was so many plot problems especially in character development and relationships.

Next thing you know she's implying she'd like him to spend the night out of nowhere and he's telling her he loves her. Where did that develop in the one or two days they knew each other?

Didn't make any sense and I didn't feel any chemistry between the characters at all from his style of writing. The plot which I'm sure was meant to be suspenseful was too predictable and simplistic to be intriguing.

The reviewer mentioned above obviously has never read Dan Brown's novels. I didn't hate the book, but I definitely wouldn't read it again or recommend it to others.

While I liked hearing about ancient artifacts, archeology and the ins-and-outs of Italy's system of finding and working with artifacts, I found this book had flat characters and little suspense.

The characters, even the main one, had little to no development or personality. Furthermore, while the plot is an interesting premise, it never grabbed my attention.

Even with twenty pages left I was able to put the book down and do something else. I had no compulsion to continue to read or understand what was happening, which is about the worst thing that can be said about a book centered around a mystery.
